Foil used in Godfather

Foil was one of the many literary features I found in this film. Francis Ford Coppola portrays foil in the Godfather in one scene where the 3 brothers Tom Hagen, Micheal, and Santino are discussing about a plan. The plan was to figure out how to kill Sollozzo and the Police Chief in a spot where no one would find out. The room arrangement where everyone was sitting was in a way that shows how Micheal has a part of Tom and Santino inside of him. Francis expresses Tom's intelligent side inside Micheal because in the story when they were discussing about the plan Micheal was thinking about everything step by step. Micheal also thinks before he acts like Tom. For example how to get out without anyone knowing he killed them, what the locations should be and more. Micheal's aggressive and ruthless side comes from his other brother Santino. In the story Micheal shows that when they were talking about how to get rid of the problem and Micheal just suggests to kill both of them.

This image below shows the room arrangement in which the 3 brothers were in. As you can see Micheal is in between them.

Allusion used in Godfather

In this movie, Francis Ford Coppola is usually using the allusion literary feature. The one I will be explaining about is how the godfather, Don Vito Corleone, is portrayed as Jesus Christ. In one scene Don Vito Corleone was with John Cazale and were going to shop for fruits. Don Vito was beside a fruit stand when these men showed up. Don Vito realized these men had weapons and he ran to the car where Fredo was in. As soon as he reached the car shots were fired at Don Vito. He took in 5 shots. In Christian belief, Jesus took in 5 wounds from nails(one in his right hand, one on his left, one through his left foot, one in his right foot and a spear though is stomach)when he was put on the cross. This is one thing that shows how Don Vito is an allusion of Jesus Christ. After the shots, he still did not die. This is another allusion of Jesus because when Jesus was on the cross and died he came back alive once again.
